Finding your superpowers with Lisa Lang
Futurist, FashionTech and New Media Game Changer Lisa Lang is the new mentor of the Master in Digital Fashion.
Dubbed one of Forbes Europe’s Top 50 Women in Tech, the German entrepreneur is eager to help students do things differently, get rid of their fear and fine-tune their superpowers.
Lisa Lang knows a thing or two about making a statement. Since her early days working in a male-dominated workplace drenched in old jeans and plain t-shirts, Lang never quite fit in. Why didn’t her industry understand dressing smart and feeling pretty while also being a passionate technologist was a possibility? This question lead Lang on the inspirational journey she is on today. It’s also one of the many reasons why she’s ready to give back through mentorship. The time has come to encourage students to fight for what they believe in.
“Mentorship in fashion is important. You don’t have to make the same mistakes over again. It’s not just about what you do with your hands, but what you do with your mind. The most efficient and innovative way [of being successful] is teaming up with someone who’s more senior with you. And this is not a one-way street. Your mentor learns as much [from you]. This is why I love to mentor, I learn so much.”
Lisa Lang has also been on the receiving end of mentorship. Throughout her career, she has been coached by various professionals from different industries, and she is cognitive of the way it has shaped her future, helping her accept the hard times and finding the courage to keep moving forward.
“The best thing that can happen to you is hearing someone say, ‘It’s fine. You’re not alone. It happened to me.’ One of the best things [a mentor] ever said to me was,’The only difference between you and me is I have more experience and I’ve made more mistakes than you’ and I tell that to my mentees. This is a journey and it will take time. Just enjoy the ride.”
The Master in Digital Fashion isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s cutting-edge, combining creativity and technology. Lang is also an Artificial Intelligence lover, and she is passionate about the role of AI in the fashion industry. “We have to teach the machine. We have to think. AI is a tool and it’s the job of a designer to be in control of the tools. It also means that you always have to stay ahead. You always have to be a little bit smarter than the machine so run…run. Because this is a marathon.”
If Artificial Intelligence is a marathon, our future Master in Digital Fashion students are ready to train. Welcome to the Polimoda mentorship team, Lang.
