Marco De Vincenzo Loves Fashion: "We're lucky to be able to bring dreams to life through design"

The Collection Design mentor answers rapid-fire questions

Polimoda asked BoF 500 Fashion Designer, Founder of his eponymous label, Fendi Leather Goods Head Designer and Master in Collection Design mentor Marco De Vincenzo a few rapid-fire questions about the industry.

"As a creative, I admire Marco's work, talent and courage. He has been able to follow his intinct, not tempted by trends and has reached the expectations of both press and buyers. His vision is bold, independent and authentic; accuracy is exactly what we need in fashion nowadays. I think he has a terrific ability in manipulating colors and materials. He brings the idea of Italian craftsmanship into a futuristic vision. Marco is the perfect mentor for the Master in Collection Design. His ability to link artisanal tradition with innovation and authenticity with coherence is a great reference for our students."
-Head of Design Department Massimiliano Giornetti.

Hi, Marco. What does it take to design a collection?
Instinct. It's the only thing I let myself be guided by.

If you could change one thing in the fashion industry, what would it be?
The concept of time. I would like some processes to be slowed down so I can do less, but better.

Is social media important for fashion?
It is fundamental. It will take a long time to learn to use new forms of language. We think we're dominating them, but we're still just at the beginning and building our confidence.

What should future Polimoda students wear during a Zoom interview?
What represents them the most.

What is the best and worst thing about being a designer?
There are no negatives. We're lucky to be able to bring dreams to life through design.

"I often have musical memories when I think about the most important moments of my creative life."

If you could turn back time and change one decision in your career, what would it be?
I would like to enjoy the success that self-criticism did not allow me to enjoy.

How do you deal with the immense pressure of designing a collection?
I am never under pressure when it comes to others, only with myself. Sooner or later, I find my way out of it.

Do you have any advice for young designers in the industry?
Do not be changed by the trends of the moment.

Did you have a mentor during your career?
Not one in particular, but I think I have never been impervious to the beautiful things that others could instill in me.

How does music play a part in your design. Do you listen to music when you're creating?
I often have musical memories when I think about the most important moments of my creative life. "RING" by Mint Royale featuring Willem Dafoe is still one of the strongest emotions ever felt during a fashion show a few years ago.
