By definition this course aims to help students use their individual skills to undertake a career in the world of Fashion and Culture as a Curator or Trend Researcher. Now that Fashion has entered the museum and exhibition world, the Fashion Curator represents a new professional figure. Fashion garments are archived in the same way as works of art. Specialised and qualified Curators in the field of costume and dress can bring new energy to museum management and exhibition design.

All visual concepts of fashion will be studied during the course, whether a fashion show, a retail presentation, or a museum exhibition. A fashion garment can have many different lives: starting in the design studio it then becomes a consumer object and ultimately an archived artistic item.

MASTER|COURSE|DESCRIPTION

The course will analyse the 3 different phases of a Fashion Curator’s work; the first phase is the study of the subject and the content of an exhibition, the second involves environmental and interior design, and the third is the educational aspect and its transmission to a general audience.

We will review fashion museums such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum, New York, the MoMu of Antwerp, the FIT of New York, the Museé des Art Décoratifs in Paris and specific exhibitions such as “Looking at Art – Looking at Fashion” held at the Biennale in Florence in 1996.

Faculty is partly academic from the research field and partly practical with a sound background in exhibition design; both have extensive experience in the field.
