Pinguini Tattici Nucleari wear Polimoda students’ creations on tour

A sold-out summer tour in the most significant Italian stadiums. The pop band Pinguini Tattici Nucleari goes on stage wearing custom-made clothes, and what’s more, they’re not dressed by a famous brand but by our third-year Undergraduate in Fashion Design students. The project results from a collaboration between the band and our school.

Students were asked to research, work and play on the theme of “Fake News”, the title of Pinguini Tattici Nucleari’s latest album. In a unicum in the contemporary music scene, the six members of the band of the year decided to be dressed not by a brand or a famous creative director, but by the talent and creativity of our young students.

Pinguini Tattici Nucleari asked Polimoda to create six completely coordinated outfits to wear for all the stops on the summer tour which is registering sold out in the main Italian stadiums, from Venice, Milan, and Florence, to Turin, Rome, and other cities.

Third-year Fashion Design students were invited to present stylistic proposals on the subject of fake news, studying the material related to the tour and the history of the band. The project was divided into two different main processes: the development of the prints and the creation of the garments. Students presented five different proposals, among which the band chose their own favorite.

Students took care of the development of the project from the main idea to the finishing touches, confronting each other with the band, studying their different needs and physical characteristics. After getting inspired by the covers and the graphics on the album “Fake News”, they played with news and newspaper articles. So the patterns colored stripes aim to reproduce the effect of ink dragged from a broken printer. The placements were first made on the computer, to be then recreated by hand and finally professionally printed and enriched with embroidery.

The second step was the development of tailored garments, jackets, shirts and trousers, starting from the different characteristics of each member of the band.  Among the requirements to always keep in mind, the functionality and lightness of the clothes, which had to be suitable for the movements during the mid-summer concerts’ nights, and the different body shapes of the musicians, for whom the garments are have been adapted according to personal and technical needs for the exhibition. A great challenge for the students, who had to identify themselves with the movements of the musicians on stage, but also according to the different instruments they would play.

The young fashion designers Gabriela, Luca, Olivia, Ian and Anahit, met with Riccardo, Nicola, Lorenzo, Simone, Matteo and Elio several times, both at the Polimoda headquarters in Florence and Milan, for fittings with test fabrics, during which the design and fit were checked and adjusted until the perfect fit.

At the end, the definitive garments with printed fabrics were packaged in double copies, to be worn by Pinguini Tattici Nucleari who said they were very satisfied. Great satisfaction also for the students, who felt to have contributed to the success of the show thanks to their unique talent.
