Overview

Heritage constitutes a fundamental part of a brand’s identity, it is a visual narrative that intertwines stories, traditions, values and innovations. A brand that preserves its heritage through a dedicated archive not only celebrates its history but also builds an emotional connection with the public, an invisible thread that connects the past to the future. Archives fuel imagination and research, sparking creativity in new and original forms.

The value of heritage in fashion, supported by archives that preserve products, documents, images and culture, has been consistently reinforced since the beginning of the 21st century. This has driven fashion brands to create and maintain museums and archives, where past collections not only preserve but become valuable resources for contemporary designers, bridging tradition and innovation. In the current fashion landscape, a well-curated sense of heritage, supported by an organized archive, becomes a strategic asset. Brands are digitizing their archives, making part of the materials accessible to the public. This transparency creates a direct dialogue with the public, strengthening emotional and cultural connections.

The attention towards heritage, as an essential tool for understanding the present, has given rise to new professional figures, capable of transforming company heritage  into an engine of innovation capable of generating new ideas, products, and business models. These professional figures deal with brand history, archiving, cataloging, digitization, conservation, research, storytelling, and exhibition activities in relationships with various departments of a company and with the public.

This master course provides a foundational understanding of the significance of fashion heritage and the principles of archive management. Students will explore the historical and cultural importance of fashion as a reflection of societal values, identity and craftsmanship. The course covers essential concepts in collecting, documenting, and preserving fashion clothing, artifacts, textiles, and accessories. Emphasis is placed on developing skills in archival practices, cataloging, digital documentation, and ethical considerations in heritage management.

Through case studies and practical exercises, students will learn how to organize and manage fashion archives, setting the stage for careers in fashion houses, fashion research, fashion archives, museums, and cultural institutions.
