Polimoda alumna Olga Vasyukova is on the grind. The emerging Russian designer’s gender-inclusive brand Red September launched last year and has been making waves on a global scale. “I imagine the final shape of a thing in my head, break it into its component parts, and then I work with it in a flat,” she explains to i-D Vice, revealing the milk carton photo that inspired her signature shoulder pad silhouette, strict work ethic and new collection, Sons of Anarchy. The future’s looking bright for the young visionary.
From telephone repairman to shoe designer, alumnus Chris Donovan is proof that it’s never too late to chase pipe dreams. Having completed Polimoda’s Master in Footwear Design, the fashion protagonist is currently working on his first line of high-end women’s shoes, earning him a feature in Forbes‘ round-up of career-launching experts and bearing testament to the power of change.
The spearheading exhibition “Gender Bending Fashion” at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is a catalyst for change. Featuring an array of sketches, paintings, photographs and videos, as well as contemporary pieces by Italian fashion designer and alumnus Alessandro Trincone, the gender expression and identity conversation is finally taking center stage. By dismantling the binary, the well-established talent is calling into question what masculinity should look like.
Alessia Messina is taking footwear to sky-high levels of excellence. At the 96th edition of Lineapelle, the fresh young talent won the 2019 Footwear Award at the INTRECCINCANTIERE fashion contest hosted by leather leader Manifattura di Domodossola. The awe-inspiring jury included Raffaello Napoleone (Pitti Immagine CEO), Bruna Rossi, Gianni Russo (Lineapelle president), as well as other fashion experts.
For Dimitar Dradi, a female-centric approach to art is imperative to embodying society’s modern woman. A hybrid between fashion designer and artist, the young prodigy is being praised internationally for his collection, transforming mayhem into harmony while bringing human emotions and aesthetics to the front line of fashion.
