New habits for Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze’s staff

Master in Collection Design student Chuang Yu Hsuan announced as winner for the design of the museum’s new uniforms

When you first step inside the Galleria dell’Accademia you can’t help but notice him, the icon of Renaissance art, Michelangelo’s David. It was under his gaze that the press conference to announce the chosen design for the museum staff’s new uniforms took place.

Presented by Director of Polimoda Massimiliano Giornetti, Director of Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze Cecilie Hollberg and CEO of Pitti Immagine Raffaello Napoleone, Chuang Yu Hsuan’s, known as Giovanna, innovative yet reverent approach was chosen after many different stages of a challenging project open to all students of the course.

The students researched the Galleria dell’Accademia by conducting a site visit and privately studying, before designing their collections and presenting them to the jury consisting of Massimiliano Giornetti, Cecilie Hollberg, Raffaello Napoleone and Head of Editorial Content at Vogue Italia, Francesca Ragazzi. After a feedback session, the projects were modified accordingly, and the winner was selected.

Meeting the project requirements meant creating fashionable and unique designs within budget constraints, prioritizing wearer comfort and functionality. It was definitely a challenge to balance creativity with practicality while making sure to fulfill the vision within financial limits.

Giovanna was mainly inspired by the golden ratio, finding its connection and presence in Renaissance art fascinating. The knitwear patterns and embroidery details are indeed reminiscent of Fibonacci’s swirl. The shape of the garments reference classic 60s silhouettes while the knitwear elements keep the collection contemporary. The colors are neutral, paying testimony to the eminent Galleria dell’Accademia blue. Small details in the museum itself, such as the patterns on the floor, have been translated onto the uniform’s accessories, rendering them identifiable and iconic.

The winning design has been passed on to the Galleria dell’Accademia. The next stage of the project consists in producing the uniforms and distributing them to museum staff.
