Inside the Made in Italy manufacturing district

What is it?

The Polimoda Design Lab is a genuine hub of interconnection with local businesses, site of all leatherware workshops, for the creation of accessories, bags and footwear, and of the new department dedicated to textiles.

All of the workshops are equipped with industrial equipment for the creation of educational projects in an environment that faithfully mirrors the reality of company manufacturing departments.

The Lab has over 200 classic and next-generation machines, such as sewing machines, professional tools for finishing prototypes, ironing and steaming boards, linking machines and machines for processing leather.

Students can also make use of a dedicated shop where they can purchase materials for their projects at discounted prices.

The site is open 12 hours a day, during which, outside of lesson times, students can make use of the equipment and the valuable and essential advice of the expert and qualified Polimoda staff, who guarantee assistance and maintenance.

What’s it like?

Opened in January 2015 in Scandicci, in the heart of the Italian leatherware manufacturing district, twenty minutes from Florence, Polimoda Design Lab is a 3500 square meter building developed according to the leading contemporary construction principles.

Lots of attention has been focused on lighting, soundproofing and respect for the environment so students can design in a setting that aids concentration.

The spaces of the Design Lab guarantee excellent acoustic comfort, a domotics system for the optimisation and centralized management of the air conditioning and lighting system, and an automatic system which, based on the external lighting, makes it possible to regulate the lighting of the various rooms, with significant energy savings.
