As 2017 boils down to a fistful of hours before the new year makes its first appearance over the horizon, here is a selection of our favorite moments in chronological order, the ones that over the past 12 months have left their mark on the history of Polimoda and set forth new goals in the school’s New Year’s resolutions.
On March 30th a veritable fashion summit took place in the ballroom of Villa Favard, featuring Anja Aronowsky Cronberg of Vestoj, Jennifer Minniti of the Pratt Institute, Floriane de Saint Pierre, Stefan Siegel of Not Just a Label, Raffaello Napoleone of Pitti Immagine, Carlo Capasa of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana and Polimoda Director Danilo Venturi. Moderated by Linda Loppa, the panel discussion placed a specific focus on adapting young professionals to the evolving industry.
2017 marked the launch of the first-ever Alumni Night. Held on the 31st of March, this special get-together was meant to crown Polimoda’s three-day head-hunting event, Business Links, with a chance for former Polimoda students from all over the world to join and celebrate their alma mater inside the sumptuous setting of Villa Favard.
The Tell Me About You fashion show was definitely a peak-experience for students and faculty members alike. On June 15th, 19 fashion design graduates walked their end-of-year creations down a runway lined with fashion experts, influencers, critics and teaching staff. Sound design was orchestrated by house producer Kim Ann Foxman while the Villa’s rooms and walls hosted an attention-grabbing video mapping installation.
Polimoda is determined to stay abreast and comply with the ever-changing fashion system and to do so it has chosen to establish close collaborations with industry leaders and experts. In September 2017 the school launched the Master’s course in Fashion Retail Management in partnership with fashion giant Gucci, offering students unique access to the industry’s core and learn more about the growing retail sector.
First announced in July, the partnership between LVMH’s prestigious professional training program, Institut des Métiers d’Excellence (IME), and Polimoda officially took off in October. The generous funding from the Region of Tuscany and the Fondo Sociale Europeo covered full tuition for all of the 12 selected Leather-Pro students.
The 2017 BoF Rankings confirmed Polimoda’s leading role in worldwide fashion education. The in-depth survey assigned top-ten positions in all three categories, awarding the institute an astounding 5th place among the Fashion Business graduate programs. This was one of the most significant achievements of the year and it will surely fuel the school’s desire to further perfect its academic offer and services.
Since its birth, Polimoda has always openly professed its love for content and throughout the years has managed to maintain a deeply cultural approach to all of its communications and outputs. The latest endeavour is the Almanac, an almost 300-page hybrid publication meant to put insightful interviews and essays side by side with the school’s rich catalog of courses, as to showcase both the institute’s academic offer and will to always dig below the surface and read between the lines of fashion education
Starting November 2017, final-year Fashion Design undergrad students welcomed newly appointed mentor Sara Kozlowski, Director of Education and Professional Development for the Council of Fashion Designers of America, who has taken on the task of advising and supporting them up to the big Fashion Show finale. This important addition to Polimoda’s teaching staff supports the school’s intention to strengthen the connection with overseas partner CFDA.
Towards the end of 2017, the Swiss luxury goods group and Polimoda announced their will to jointly launch a Master’s degree in Luxury Business. Over the course of the 9-month study plan, representatives from both Richemont and its Maisons will offer unprecedented insight into the world of high-quality products and marketing.
Although it couldn’t technically qualify as one moment, this series of monthly gatherings has truly become an essential staple in Polimoda’s calendar. Launched in 2016, its ever-growing list of guest lecturers includes Olivier Saillard, Marco Bizzarri, David Fischer and fashion power-couple Brooke Taylor & Nana Aganovich, 2018 is shaping up to be as rich in content as 2017, kicking off with two January Rendez-Vous featuring British GQ editor-in-chief Dylan Jones and Sarah Blair and Christopher Lacy of Barneys New York.
