Explaining the topics of his thought-provoking guest lecture entitled Shrinking: Fashion, Mr Farmer states “As a parallel and play on words, the scale in which we produce Fashion is part of the all-consuming – Massive – overwhelming – grotesque – many feel towards the idea of ‘Fashion’ now. Maybe by ‘Shrinking’ it – Making it smaller and special again and not so HUGE we can save it from itself and prevent it not going completely insane, having a ‘Shrink’ might save it from ending up in the metaphorical mental institution it is heading towards, if it’s not already there that is?”.
Jonathan Kyle Farmer is also a practicing designer and has worked for leading fashion labels, including Bruce Oldfield and Stylesight (now WGSN). His teaching experience includes roles at Parsons School of Design and the University of East London. Notable professional assignments include an education consultancy at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in conjunction with the exhibitions Savage Beauty, on Alexander McQueen, and Impossible Conversations, on Prada and Schiaparelli.
