The concentrated two-year program in Atelier Design allows participants the pleasure of making garb identical to how an atelier would. As the technical skills of students improve from the first to the second year, a specialization is determined among the many categories of fashion products (including men’s suiting, women’s underwear, children’s outerwear, etc.), preparing students to develop portfolios and execute a final project as a tableau vivant performance in front of a large audience.
Classes are run by teachers from the industry in the new open space Design Lab. Students receive a welcome kit with tools and materials and have access to expert guest lectures, an immense library, the computer lab, as well as production machines. This course has an intense program of reviews, workshops and field trips organized throughout the two-year program.
Candidates with a secondary school (high school) diploma or equivalent are eligible and selected after the admission process. English language proficiency is required. Lessons take place October to June, amounting to a total of 600 contact hours. The course is completed with an internship in a fashion company at the end of the second year.
First Year: Foundation
Contemporary Fashion, Textile Science, Fashion Design Technology I, Pattern making I, Tailoring Techniques I (womenswear), Draping Couture Atelier I, CAD Design I, Materials Purchasing, Product Development I (design analysis), Craft to Business.
Second Year: Personal Portfolio
Costume & Iconography, Textile Industry and Design, Fashion Design Technology II, Knit Technology, Pattern making II, Tailoring Techniques II (menswear), Draping Couture Atelier II, 3D CAD Design, Product Development II (specs & sheets plus line plans), Portfolio and Presentation.
Project work, seminars, workshops as well as company and museum visits are also included throughout the two-year program.
Upon successful completion of the Associate program, students will be able to:
- Master construction and patternmaking techniques to translate a designer’s sketch into the full realization of a garment.
- Create and develop complex patterns both manually and through digital software.
- Use crafting techniques on fabrics, accessories and construction elements, from draping to embroidery and manipulation.
- Master techniques in the areas of bespoke tailoring, couture, Ready-to-Wear, costume design and historical garments.
- Create a professional portfolio.
The Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (The National Chamber for Italian Fashion) is the non-profit Association which disciplines, coordinates and promotes the development of Italian Fashion. The Association represents all the highest cultural values of Italian Fashion and it aims to protect, co-ordinate and strengthen its image, both in Italy and abroad.
The Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana is comprised by 111 Associates and is the point of reference for all the national and international initiatives aimed at valuing and promoting Italian style and Fashion.
The Association also organizes Milano Fashion Week, the premier fashion industry event, which gives brands the opportunity to showcase their collections twice a year for men's collections and twice a year for women's.
