A fastening device used from earliest times in costume, consisting of a rim of metal with a hinged tongue, carrying a spike in order to secure a strap or belt which passes through the rim and is then pierced and held in place by the spike. As well as acting as a fastening device for belts and straps, buckles have been fashionable in certain periods in footwear, both masculine and feminine.
