General category of handmade lace made with small bobbins holding each yarn attached to a small pillow. Paper design is placed on pillow, pins inserted, and yarns interlaced around pins to form pattern. Designs may also be made separately and appliquéd to handmade net. Also called “pillow lace ”.

Genoa was famous for its gold and silver lace and for braids. The making of these textiles prepared the way for the making of bobbin lace with flaxen thread.
