An ornamental textile formed without the aid of a ground fabric, in this differing from embroidery. It is an openwork fabric produced by a network of threads, twisted together and sometimes knotted, to form patterns.

Context:
Fine laces often have beautifully scalloped edges that are wonderfully regular. You can overhang a scalloped lace border over a straight edge (align the apex of the scallops along the edge), or shape the fabric to form a scalloped underlay.
