Metal or plastic fastening made in two parts. They are sewn to either side of an opening to be closed in a garment. One part is in male form, the other female and these fit into one another. This type of closure is used to close garments at places where there is little strain. Often replaced in contempary garments by zippers and grippers. This american term has now almost taken over from the english press stud.
