Noun
Countable
Definition:  Piece of bone, metal, glass, or any composition, of various shapes, having shanks or holes, called eyes, by means of which it is sewn to garments. Buttons are usually functional and decorative, because most of them are visible on a garment. A few are only functional, such as the hidden button on the inner fly extension of a pair of slacks, or only decorative, such as the buttons on the cuffs of a tailored jacket. To be functional, buttons require the presence of a buttonhole.
DCF, 1999
Context:  The choice of buttons for a fine tailored jacket should be in keeping with the high quality of the rest of the garment.
