Definition:  A fabric construction in which a layer of fill—often down, cotton or batting—is sandwiched in-between two other fabrics, usually by stitching the layers together in crisscross lines. Often used in outerwear and sleepwear, quilting adds warmth for cozy comfort. It can also be used to provide bulk.
Polo Ralph Lauren, 2005
Context:  Lucire enjoyed Cynthia Rowley’s fall–winter 2002–3 collection, which was luxurious and heavy, using everything from fur to mother-of-pearl. The coat was the star here, while the theme seemed to be patchwork or quilting.
