Pants shorter than knee-length, originally part of male dress, have been worn by women since the 1920s in various lengths. They were associated with sporting gear and casual wear until the late 1970s, when designers showed suits of shorts and tailored jackets on the runways. They remain, however, a casual item of clothing.
