Each year Fondazione Pitti Immagine Discovery hunts for the newest Italian designers and international names who produce in Italy, for Who Is On Next? Uomo. This year in collaboration with Altaroma and L’Uomo Vogue, six designers have been selected to show their latest collections at Pitti Uomo 92, including Polimoda’s own Gianfranco Villegas.
During the opening ceremony on June 13th at the Palazzo Vecchio, an international jury of top buyers, fashion journalists and opinion makers awarded Gianfranco with an honorable mention for his SS18 collection, which is no mean feat considering this was the first time he entered this incredibly prestigious competition.
Self Made by Gianfranco Villegas is the brand that Gianfranco set up after graduating from Fashion Design at Polimoda in 2013. The menswear collections are inspired by his Filipino roots, Italian tailoring, hip-hop culture and the street fashion landscape, which with hand-embroidered details and carefully selected Italian textiles give his brand a strong point of view. Along with the garments, Gianfranco has created an original visual identity for his brand with iconic shoots and videos that have been published by the likes of Kaltblut, I-D, Hypebeast and Fucking Young! Magazine.

Born in Florence in 1990 to Filipino parents, Gianfranco began making clothing at the age of 14 to satisfy his great sartorial passion, looking to Raf Simons with enthusiasm. After finishing his studies, Gianfranco worked at Cedric Jacquemyn in Antwerp and with Damir Doma in Paris. In 2012, he also began working with the talented Erik Bjerkesjo, another graduate designer from Polimoda who in fact won the Who Is On Next? Uomo award in January of that year. Gianfranco’s collection will also be displayed inside the Pitti Uomo 92 fair in the Unconventional pavilion, and presented on the evening of June 15th. Congratulations Gianfranco!
