Once we were what we were
then we are becoming what we had
then what we consumed
and now they have made becoming what we throw away
The 2018 edition of the Polimoda Fashion Show will take place at 10 pm on June 12th on the occasion of the 94th edition of Pitti Immagine Uomo. Manifattura Tabacchi, a striking feat of Italian rationalist architecture just outside the city center and soon-to-be third branch of Polimoda, will host the best menswear and womenswear collections by final-year students of the undergraduate course in Fashion Design.
In the spirit of fostering new outlooks and reclaiming the value of disregarded subjects, Polimoda’s graduation show is titled Separate Collection, a play on words that emerged from the concept of fashion upcycling. Each collection was developed from the notion of expressing oneself to the fullest, as overconsumption is generated by the lack of identity. By recycling and rethinking the value of clothing, materials, places and identities, we restore dignity, resurrecting new life and possible futures for generations to come. In this show, independence of thought and imagination are the only luxury: void of excess, all that remains is the essential.
Sara Kozlowski, CFDA Director of Education and Professional Development, will guide the event, the epic outcome of a four-year course of study. The end-of-year Fashion Show is the culmination of a year-long collaboration with Kozlowski, who Polimoda welcomed as a mentor and lecturer. Moreover, the event is an opportunity to showcase the work of young designers before a selected international audience of fashion insiders, from journalists to companies and industry professionals, alongside an international jury who together will decide the Best Collection for 2018.
The show’s director will be Piergiorgio Del Moro at DM Fashion Studio, the world-renowned casting director and member of the BOF 500.
Composed of some of the most influential contemporary fashion figures, this jury will decide the Best Collection of 2018. The awarded student will then receive special support from the Institute in the academic year following.
As a forward-thinking and human-first institution, Polimoda will hold its 2018 Fashion Show in a space that embodies the notion of revaluing what society has deemed worthless. After almost two decades of abandonment, the Manifattura Tabacchi begins its transformation into a hub of contemporary culture and life, an 8-hectare space set to house Polimoda’s third branch in its 6000 square-meter “edificio dell’orologio”. Polimoda’s choice of scenery for its annual fashion event follows the footsteps of other prominent designers – from Gucci to Gosha Rubchinskiy – that reused the area’s warehouses for their runway shows and related events during the annual Pitti Uomo trade fair.
The Manifattura Tabacchi not only reflects the concept behind this year’s Polimoda graduation show but it also captures the essence of Polimoda’s guiding philosophy. Students were asked to express him or herself to their fullest potential, reflecting on the notion of overconsumption and excess waste as the products of lack of identity. The recycling and rethinking of clothes, spaces, materials and the dimensions of everyday life are the key to providing opportunity and space for future generations – and this urban wasteland is a major opportunity to take the architectural remnants of society and transform them into new life.
Though inauguration day is set for 2019, the 1940s building will begin hosting students as early as this October in the adjacent building’s ground floor in order to meet Polimoda’s growing demand for space.
Selected from the entire cohort of final year Fashion Design students, the following young designers will present their collections on the runway this year.
The Polimoda Fashion Show 2018 will be published live via our Facebook page on June 12th from 10pm.
This event is by invitation only.
