Study Plans

Main subjects are Fashion-, Architecture-, Art-related, and study the cultural and sociological effects of fashion and art. The course has some shorter lectures, held by flash professors, individuals or professionals who are experts in their fields.

History of Contemporary Fashion: The resent evolutions in fashion, especially end of last century are very interesting. The book of Caroline Evans “Fashion on the Edge” is a guideline during the course of contemporary fashion.

History of Contemporary Art: ‘Arte Povera’,‘conceptual art’ are phenomenon of the 20th century. Many more art movements of the 20th Century will be analysed in this course. Art installations, exhibitions, art fairs and museums will be analysed.

The body in Art & Fashion: Fashion designers are inspired by art and artists, but artist look at fashion to express themselves. The body is the common inspiration and in this course we will find cross over in both creative expressions. Artist such as Orlan, Messager, Cindy Sherman and many others will be studied. Contemporary dance movements are in close contact with the fashion world. Fashion designers work for theatre, film, furniture design. All these border lines between art and fashion will be studied in the course. Other cultural apects such as ‘Japonism in fashion’ are explained in the course.

Fashion curating: Fashion entered the museum world. More and more Fashion Museums opened their doors. Fashion garments are archived in the same way as art pieces. Fashion exhibitions are not only exposing garments in an historical parcours but in a special created environment. ‘Fashion curating’ is a new profession. The course will analyse the 3 different steps of a fashion curator; the first step is the study of the subject and the content, the second step is the space design and the third step is the educational aspect of the exhibition and the translation to the public. We will comment on Fashion Museums such as Victoria & Albert museum in London, The Costume Institute of Metropolitan Museum New York, MoMu of Antwerp and others.

Shop design: the Prada shop in New York is designed by the Architect Rem Koolhaas. Shops are more and more places for contemplation, while museums are proposing entertainment and shopping. How will the consumer behaviour react in the world of ‘second live’, ‘shop sharing’ and ‘guerrilla stores’. Is the Art world influenced by this fashion shopping behaviour?

Space design: Related to exhibition design and shop design we will study space design. The use of a space and the impact on the audience is important for understanding fashion and art. The emotional impacts spaces have on the audience are an interesting phenomenon to study.

Sociology of fashion: Sociology of fashion is a key element to understand fashion movements and changes in fashion.

Case study of a fashion designer: a final case study of a fashion designer whose collections are inspired by art, politics or art movements will be delivered in a thesis; Designers such as Elsa Shiaparelli, YSL, Hussein Chalayan, A.F. Vandevorst, Martin Margiela, and many others can be analysed in the course. Guest speakers can be invited.
