The
new Textile Design program aims to train professionals in the field
of industrial design of furnishing and industrial textiles. This program
follows an eclectic approach which makes it possible to join inspiration
and creativity to technical and artistic know-how, as well as to knowledge
of materials and of the most modern textile production and finishing
processes. Artistic training is combined with intense lab work consisting
of weaving, textile printing, in-depth study of raw materials and
yarns, computer graphics and CAM. Planning skills are developed through
analysis of fashion trends, along with study of marketing and global
market analysis.
The future textile designer thus learns to develop collections according
to the seasons, through the definition of materials, textile structures,
decorative motifs, colour ranges and possible finishing details.
Students will also learn about new trends in taste, have the chance
to test their creativity within the context of the parameters of industrial
production and develop new samples in sync with the specific commercial
target of the company they will be working for.
The first year, the student will enrich his/her cultural background
in the history of art and develop the foundations of drawing and graphics.
Students undertake the theoretical and hands-on part of their study
of textile weaves and graphic composition of decorative design for
prints; they begin to familiarize themselves with raw materials and
the productive process.
During the second year, students begin the study of textile chemistry
and dyeing. They will become familiar with the fashion system and
begin their studies of the marketing and planning of textiles. They will learn to work with deadlines
and according to the rules of industrial production and market quality
control. Students will also consolidate their experience in CAD planning.
The entire year is dedicated to the planning and development of a
sample base for spring/summer and one for autumn/winter; the fabrics
are planned with the computer and realized in hand-weaving or print
labs; the collaboration with an important leading fashion company
allows for the experience of planning and creating jacquard fabrics
on mechanical looms. The entire class will present its collections
at the Polimoda stand at the Prato Expo.
Students are to study English for the entire three years of the program.
The program ends with an additional three-month company internship.
A dedicated Internship Commission will evaluate each student for
acceptance to the internship program. This will take place with an
interview aimed at assessing the candidate¹s motivation and
preparation. The commission will also check the applicant¹s
attendance, grades (when required) and the documentation required by
the Students¹ Regulations.
The Internship Commission, on the basis of merit, will direct the
applicant to the type and sector of business where he or she will
have the opportunity for an interview which will determine final
selection for the internship.
