POLIMODA|COURSE|DESCRIPTION

Students are encouraged to study and analyse how history and culture evolve and can contribute to the future of shoe and accessory design in order to gain inspiration and create a distinctive and unique identity.

During the first year participants learn the craft studying pattern design and sewing techniques and realise a handmade shoe. Based on technical deconstruction and creative reconstruction they design an experimental shoe as well as learning 3D sculpting to create a form and a prototype. Graphic design classes, including academic studies of the body, shoes and accessories, are crucial to communicate designs and illustrate ideas.

The second year concentrates on conceptualisation, research and skills. Students will create a collection after analysing, synthesising and interpreting different sources related to contemporary art, fashion and ethnic cultures. They will learn 2D and 3D CAD and computer graphics, creating lasts and forms, and will further personalize their designs. With the skills they have acquired they will realize and present a portfolio and collection of shoes and accessories.

The third year is dedicated to the design, management, and communication of the innovative concept underlying the final collection, and its realisation based on detailed research. Students are encouraged to use the contacts they have acquired and to seek the support of industry. Visual merchandising, packaging and branding are introduced and the student will present a portfolio and final showcase. At the end of year, the most promising work of each student will be exhibited at public events, exhibitions such as the Polimoda Fashion Week, the website, and to the media. By the end of the course, the student will be the distinctive author and art director of his/her own collection.

As a conclusion to the three-year course, the optional Masterclass at Polimoda gives students the opportunity to further develop and strengthen their identity and to specialize at Master level in well defined areas.
