In September 2008 Polimoda opened up a new, prestigious facility hosting the Footwear and Accessories Department. The Acciaiolo Castle in Scandicci represents a pole of excellence tucked in the heart of an area renowned for prestigious leather goods companies that created the credentials of  the “Made in Italy”.  The castle, dating back 1400, is located a few steps away from the city centre and is surrounded by a beautiful monumental garden enclosed by majestic walls with two towers on top. The indoor area of the castle is about 300 squared metres divided into 4 labs and 4 classrooms that can host more than 80 students of all the footwear and accessories courses. A real atelier for prototyping, following the footsteps of the best tradition of hand-made footwear production, a continuous experimental research on shapes, functions and use of shoes: students have at their complete disposal: moulds, leathers, fabrics and innovative synthetic materials of all kinds, a wide range of heels, soles and accessories  to realize prototypes, along with the main pieces of professional machinery allowing them to work directly with the resources provided by the companies in the area. This facility is also equipped with non conventional instruments for creating experimental prototypes, working on wood, pvc, resin and straw, aimed at enhancing the students’ creativity through innovative projects.
