A full-immersion programme on the Polimoda method of didactics that will put into practise a one student-to-one tutor approach in order to develop and enhance your Fashion Design skills. Courses will be held at Villa Favard, with it’s amazing library and in our fully equipped laboratories. You will find inspiration exploring the streets, museums, shops and the day/nightlife of Florence. This course makes you explore the fundamental disciplines of Fashion Design and compels you to practise composing, analysing and editing resources and ultimately to designing and creating a silhouette. Specific basic skills will be taught - Pattern Cutting, Sewing and Draping. Regardless of your level, you will be guided by different fashion professionals who will give you insight and feedback on your future educational or professional opportunities. You will be taught about all the creative steps a Fashion Designer has to undertake. Starting from research and concept, proceeding with conceiving a capsule collection and ending with the design of a silhouette, the development of basic patterns and a prototype garment in muslin. The whole process with all the work you will produce will be documented in a Design Book that can be used for updating your portfolio.

This four-week Leather Design course has been created to provide basic expertise in Leather Design and Artisan Techniques for Accessories, to give an understanding of the most important aspects of the creative and artisanal process. You might explore the possibility of proceeding to study a three-year undergraduate programme, four-year graduate programme, or a nine-month Masters course at Polimoda - or pursuing a career in the Fashion industry and eventually launching your own line. With this programme, Polimoda offers you an overview of the basic skills and know-how which are fundamental to the design process of Shoes and Bags. Introducing specific crucial subjects such as Computer Aided Design, Pattern Making, Prototyping, Construction Techniques and Leather Technology. The City of Florence and it’s outskirts have a lot to offer for inspiration. You will have to explore vintage shops and markets, exhibitions and really feel how this city lives. The courses will take place at Polimoda’s campus in Villa Favard, with it’s incredible library and within our fully equipped laboratories in Scandicci. You will be taught all the creative steps a designer has to undertake. Starting from research, analysis and concept, proceeding with the design of a Footwear and Accessories collection. At the end of the course you will have developed several mock-ups and handcrafted final prototypes in leather. The whole process with all the work you will produce will be bundled in a Design Book. After the course this material can be edited and used to create and/or update your portfolio.

This course aims to put you on track to gaining basic skills in Luxury Accessory design and giving you professional guidance during the process of researching, designing and imagining an accessories collection. The course will propel you into the extensive world of accessory design, focusing specifically on small leather goods, eyewear, jewellery and millinery. Luxury Design excels in the area of accessories design. This course will focus on the dichotomy between the key-principles of design and a necessary technical know-how. The course will provide you with general knowledge and a view into the mastery of traditional techniques such as sewing, enamelling, embossing and chiselling and modern techniques such as laser cutting, 3D printing, plating methods and innovative sustainable applications. All these ideas will be explored by experimenting with, on the one hand, more traditional materials such as wood, leather and metal and on the other, resins, plastics, tech fibres etc. Throughout the course, the focus will be on designing a collection of various accessories and will allow you to experiment and create their components. You will be constantly guided during the whole process and tutored in developing initial design ideas through to the realisation of prototypes.

The course objectives are to offer you an initial experience and training in the development of patterns and the realisation of garments. A fundamental role is played by those who specialise in the Technology of Fashion, one of the most sought after and highly acclaimed profiles in the Fashion Industry. The course is designed for all those who want to expand their knowledge on making patterns and prototypes. This is a preparatory programme if you want to start a career as a student or as a professional of the sartorial heritage of Made in Italy. This four-week programme covers the basic crafts and skills fundamental to the creation of Fashion Garments and the production of collections from Pattern Cutting to Draping and addresses integral subjects such as Computer Aided Design, Sewing, Pattern Design, Prototyping, Collection Management and Production Development. You will be introduced to and become familiar with how the whole cycle of producing collections is constructed, from translating Design Boards and interpreting the original sketch of a designer to composing line sheets and technical flats. From creating basic patterns, sew swatches and mock-ups to the production of prototypes. From assisting at fitting meetings, approving finishes, to conducting spec-sheets and finally launching production. The course is a multi-step practical guide on how a Fashion Collection is created, developed and produced.

If you are looking to inherit the fascinating craftsmanship in the manufacturing of leather garments and bags, this course is made for you. We challenge you to discover the specific treatments and manipulations and how leather is prepared, sewn, constructed and finished. The emphasis of the course is set on craftsmanship and techniques and in exploring the different styles of garments and bags. Additionally, the whole process from pattern design, cutting, prototyping to manufacturing will be explained and put into practice as an extension of the sample models you will realise. Highly experienced professionals will tutor you on this journey of experiences. At the end of the course your teachers will be able to give you feedback and advice on how you can proceed if you are interested in further academic studies or if you have professional objectives in mind. This course will start with a demonstration and exercises using the variety of tools and machines used in our leather manufacturing laboratories. From the first day you will have to start practising sewing and construction techniques and will finish with detailed samples of leather garments and bags, being guided step by step by our Master Artisans accompanied by technical assistants. Regardless of previous competences and experiences all students will create and finish a tote bag and at least ½ a leather jacket. Essential modern day computer programmes to create 2D representations such as Adobe Illustrator, Elitron and Solid Thinking that are used in the manufacturing process by all technicians, pattern designers and artisans will be introduced and explained. You will start compiling spec sheets and making precise technical drawings, a must-know in the industry for any leather technician.

During the eighty-hour Shoes and Bags Technology programme, you will gain an accurate understanding of the processes and techniques required for creating prototypes of shoes and bags. At the end of the programme your teachers and the Head of Department can advise you on further steps in your career as a student or as a professional in the Fashion Industry. The course is dedicated to allowing you to discover and exercise footwear and bag artisan techniques using Polimoda’s fully equipped laboratories in close collaboration with your teachers. You will immediately start practising artisan and leather hand sewing techniques and you will learn how to use all the machines. Your teachers will demonstrate the complexity of the construction of selected styles of shoes and bags and you will learn the terminology of the majority of the components in Italian and English. During the four-week programme you will create a pair of basic ballerinas and a tote bag with the guidance of a Master and a technical assistant. Simultaneously, with the basic drawing classes you will learn to make Illustrator drawings and you will be shown software programmes for 2D and 3D design. Leather Technology will help you understand the different types of hides and how to identify the differences in quality and the tanning process. You will start working on spec sheets and learn how to make precise technical drawings, a must-know communication tool for any leather technician. Furthermore, we will also provide a look at how manufacturers organise production and manage the supply chain, we will explain and analyse them together and consequently, ask you to apply them to the personal final project. During the course you will visit a Tannery, an Accessories Manufacturer and a Last Factory.

A Pattern Maker is the engineer that cooperates with the Footwear Designer. He can select or develop a last following the drawings and specifications of the designer. He examines shape, volume and construction. A well-proportioned pattern can be developed and transformed into mock-ups. The final prototype will be the reference used to define the quantity of the components and materials needed to develop the technical sheets that will be used for production. In today’s industry this process is unimaginable without the knowledge of Computer Aided Design, used for making patterns, 2D and 3D design, planning the supply chain, merchandising and production. Polimoda offers this programme for those who need to expand their knowledge and techniques prior to admission to the undergraduate, graduate or Masters courses or pursuing a professional career. During the first days of the course you will become accustomed with all the equipment, tools and machinery of our laboratory. You will immediately start practising artisan and leather sewing techniques in the presence of our masters and technicians, who will exhibit the process of creation step by step. During the four week program, through demonstrations and hands on practice you will be guided through the basic concepts of the construction of different styles of footwear. Starting with an analysis of the proportions of the shoe, each student will create different types of insoles, heels and outsoles. The course will also be dedicated to introducing vital modern day computer programmes such as Adobe Illustrator, Elitron and Solid Thinking used to create 2D and 3D representations of footwear. After a short introduction into these programmes, you will start working on spec sheets and will be taught how to make precise technical drawings, a must-know in the industry for any leather technician / footwear technologist. Furthermore, a look into the merchandising plans used in today’s fashion companies will be provided, explaining and analysing them together and consequently, applying them to your personal final project.

The portfolio is an important tool, used to promote one’s personality, skills, and authorship. In the world of fashion and design it is a crucial element required when you are pursuing further studies or looking for job opportunities and participating in competitions. This programme has been created in order to aid you in the development and creation of your portfolio. The course provides a platform of tutors who will give you feedback and a review, together with advice on the selection and presentation of your work. Furthermore it’s aim is also to assist you in completing your work, not limiting it to what has already been realized but implementing it with new ideas, the fruit of a collaboration between student and tutor resulting in a piece of truly rewarding work. The course will commence with the introduction and evaluation of your projects, pictures, sketchbooks, artworks, colour studies, collages and moods and any other work that represents your personality and experiences. You will then start to develop and project initial ideas for styles, shapes and covers of the portfolio, taking inspiration from examples presented by the tutors. As the course continues, it will provide you with an insight into typography, digitalizing and scanning images and elaborating them on programmes such as Adobe Photoshop and consequently putting them together and creating portfolio layouts, books, CVs, etc. in Adobe InDesign. The course will teach you how to do personal online promotion by creating your personal website with Adobe Muse and managing different social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. In the last stage of the course, you will focus on the final composite, putting into practice the various advice you have received while working on the final edit. The course will guide you through all the steps starting from the initial creative input and editing, moving onto image and text composition and creation of the layout, arriving at the prepress stage and ending with the actual printing and packaging. During the course, you will also be trained on personal introduction and interview skills, in order to better prepare you for any kind of future presentation.

The aim of this four-week course is to introduce you to the Imaging of Fashion. Visual Communication is extremely important to convey emotions and create desire (or rejection), the key ingredients to be successful in the fashion industry. The power of an image is that it can communicate in a very effective way and make many dreams and passions arise. The aim of this short course is to introduce you to the creation of image, illustration and video and graphic design in general. The short-course has been created with the aim of purely focusing on the 2D representation of thoughts and emotion. Going from academic drawing to photography and video and 3D graphics on screens. The world of 2D depiction is extremely vast and has been evolving over centuries, revolutionising imaging. This course aims to introduce you into this realm and make you familiar with all its various subjects, giving you a taste of the power of iconography. The course has been created to introduce you to the Visual Language of Fashion. You will be able to develop your skills in observation drawing, using different graphic techniques and subsequently you will be trained in developing and making compositions and illustrating storyboards. This process is based on the overview of the working method of graphic artists, presenting different graphic and visual techniques, such as sketching, academic and illustration drawing, photography and its manipulation with software, 2D and 3D graphics, motioned pictures, website composition, covers, magazine layouts, etc. This wide spectrum of techniques will be taught in order to enable you to define, with the advice and guidance of your tutors, if you want to pursue this field in your undergraduate, graduate, or Master course or as a professional.
